The 30 minute workout contains 5 stages: warm up, strength training, cardio training, cool down and stretching.
When you arrive for your workout, you join the ‘circuit’ at any ‘station’. The circuit consists of hydraulic resistance equipment especially designed for ladies arranged in a circle with a recovery board in between each station. There is upbeat background music playing and every 30 seconds a voice-over calls out ‘change stations now’. The machines work all the major muscle groups. The most important feature of the circuit is that everyone goes at their own pace.
How can it be done in 30 minutes?
Unlike a gym where you do cardio training separately from strength training, with Curves, you do both types of exercise at the same time by doing the strength training fast enough that you are doing a cardio workout too. Also, most of the equipment is what we call ‘double positive’. This means that you are exercising two muscle groups at the same time.
Why 30 minutes?
The 30 minute workout is enough to exhaust your muscles and if done 3 times a week it gives your heart and lungs 20 minutes at elevated rates which the British Medical Association recommends. The reason that women can stick to Curves is that even with a busy life, they can find 30-minutes to look after themselves.
